For the U.S. Postal Service, Soyka & Company performed assessment of the current state of knowledge of financial benefits and costs of implementing formal environmental management systems (EMS). We collected, reviewed, and categorized EMS implementation experience and results reported in the literature, then summarized the information to form general conclusions about the resources required to fully implement EMS within an organization, the associated benefits received, and an overall benefit: cost ratio. We also devised a framework by which the benefits and costs of EMS implementation across the Postal Service could be estimated prospectively, as well as in real time throughout the implementation process. This framework is presented in a published journal article.
